Recently our team investigated the Big Chief Roadhouse. It is a historic landmark just out of Saint Louis, MO. Located in a smaller community known as Wildwood. Lots of history resides within its walls. Big Chief Roadhouse has a celebrated history that dates back to 1929. It was built as a part of the Big Chief Highway hotel to serve travelers on the famed transcontinental highway, route 66. According to tourist guides from that period, Big Chief was one of the largest tourist cottage courts in the state. Big Chief differed from the average cottage courts in that it offered relatively elaborate dining. It is one of the very few intact full-service restaurants left on the historic roadway today. One black spot on its history involves a rumor of an unnamed young girl who was abducted from one of the cabin’s her family was renting while on vacation in the area. I searched goggle and found the story but could not verify if real or not. It is said local law enforcement searched for days and never found her. It was believed she was kidnapped and taken far away. When the ownership of the Big Chief restaurant began demolishing the cabins behind the restaurant they found a Childs body hidden within the walls of one of the cabins nearby where the young girl was abducted many years before. True or False I cannot prove either way but makes some of the evidence we caught interesting to listen to.
I was a little nervous about this hunt our equipment was limited and two of our investigators were not able to make it. We came prepared with mini dv camcorders and voice recorders. Alexandra (team) came in and used her natural gifts to locate some of the hot spots. We set up a voice recorder and camera in a glassed in dining room focused in a specific area Alex had smelled smoke/fire. She questioned Mr. LaFrance (Owner) if there had been reports of a fire and he responded the he had no prior knowledge of one. (We found online that yes there had been a fire) We had another voice recorder stationed upstairs on a large dining table and one sitting on the bar. We started the investigation upstairs asking questions and using twist mag lite flashlights to communicate with the dead. How can we do this you ask? Very easy we ask the spirits to apply pressure or energy to the item to light it up. Bright for a yes answer and very dim for no. Within seconds we had flashlight hits. The hits continued on all levels and seemed to follow us throughout the place. Mr. Lafrance questioned our equipment and really questioned our integrity by suggesting we had brought rigged flashlights and maybe had a button in our pocket working them on and off. If you visit our site you know we are only after the truth and really have much better things to do than be out at 1AM on a Sunday morning making up ghost answers on flashlights. We were able to record flashlight hits with answers to questions like “ Is this the spirit of the little girl who was taken from here?” answer: dim for no. Mr. LaFrance asked a great question at the end of the evening that I was shocked at the answer received. “ Is this the spirit of the man who killed the little girl?” answer: bright for Yes. Disturbing.
After the physical investigation was over the tedious one of listening and watching all the equipment started. No video proof was found. We did catch a woman’s voice (not Brandy or Alex) on two different voice recorders. Was this the young girl that was abducted? Or just a traveler- is still a mystery.
Having Mr. LaFrance and Brandy his manager around for the evening was fun but challenging. They both have strong A type personalities and had no problem jumping right in with there own questions and ways of doing things. So this added more time of going through the evidence by sorting out if voices we hear were they or spirits. With it not being our building, not much we could really say about it. They did seem to enjoy themselves. We truly appreciate Big Chief having our team in for this hunt and hope to be able to have access to it in the future it is a fantastic place with great history and if your in the area stop in and enjoy some fine dining and drinks and keep an eye out for a spook or two…..You just never know what is around you.

ReplyDeleteI washed dishes at Big Cheif. I can confirm the haunting nature of this place. I have also experienced unexplainable events while scrubbing dishes such as, doors being slammed open and weird temperatures. No voices however.
